the fray and sick as a dog

went to see the fray last night. cary brothers (not the cary brothers, his last name is brothers) and a local guy tim brantley opened. it was a really good show, but i'm not a big fan of the venue. it was at the loft at earthlink live. it's easy to get to and there's plenty of reasonable parking around, but i didn't like the room. it's a big room that's flanked with bars on all sides, the ceiling's only about 10 or 12 feet high, and the stage might be 2 and a half feet above the floor level. when the band playing has a piano, you can't really see the guy at the piano, in the fray's case, it's the singer. they played my favorite song first ("how to save a life") and filled the rest of the set with songs from their album, a cover of "have you ever seen the rain," and what i'm guessing was some improv to stretch some songs too long. overall it was a great show though. i played taxi when i got back into town, and that was just about as entertaining than the show. i've always said "if you need a ride, my phone's on," but i've never had so many people take advantage of it.

i had been wary of leaving blue because he's been really sick since friday, and i've cleaned up too many messes already. i decided it would be nicer to him to leave him in the bathroom than the crate, but there was no way i was leaving him anywhere near carpet. he made it from 5 until i got home at about 3, but he's still sick. at least he's making it outside though. what i've learned from this:

* kids scissors can cut the hair on a dog's backside if you don't have any others around
* if your dog whimpers to you and his back legs are trembling, it's not because he's excited, take him outside immediately
* if you need to go through a roll of paper towels, 2 cans of spot shot stain remover, 1 can of foamy carpet cleaner, and a bunch of gallon zip lock bags (a.k.a. gloves), i can loan you a dog
* don't talk to your cute neighbor and ignore whatever it is that your dog's eating off the ground. you will regret it later.

i've got a lot of work to do. i't's gonna be nice having presidents day off, then i'll endure a tuesday full of county-wide meetings.

and i leave you with this, quite possibly the funniest and most obvious joke that could have been made about cheney's car-ride hunting trip.

Jon Stewart: "I'm joined now by our own vice-presidential firearms mishap analyst, Rob Corddry. Rob, obviously a very unfortunate situation. How is the vice president handling it?

Rob Corddry: "Jon, tonight the vice president is standing by his decision to shoot Harry Wittington. According to the best intelligence available, there were quail hidden in the brush. Everyone believed at the time there were quail in the brush.

"And while the quail turned out to be a 78-year-old man, even knowing that today, Mr. Cheney insists he still would have shot Mr. Whittington in the face. He believes the world is a better place for his spreading buckshot throughout the entire region of Mr. Whittington's face."

Jon Stewart: "But why, Rob? If he had known Mr. Whittington was not a bird, why would he still have shot him?"

Rob Corddry: "Jon, in a post-9-11 world, the American people expect their leaders to be decisive. To not have shot his friend in the face would have sent a message to the quail that America is weak."

Jon Stewart: "That's horrible."

Rob Corddry: "Look, the mere fact that we're even talking about how the vice president drives up with his rich friends in cars to shoot farm-raised wingless quail-tards is letting the quail know 'how' we're hunting them. I'm sure right now those birds are laughing at us in that little 'covey' of theirs.

Jon Stewart: "I'm not sure birds can laugh, Rob."

Rob Corddry: "Well, whatever it is they do … coo .. they're cooing at us right now, because here we are talking openly about our plans to hunt them. Jig is up. Quails one, America zero.

Jon Stewart: "On a human level, is the vice president at least sorry?"

Rob Corddry: "Jon, what difference does it make? The bullets are already in the man's face. Let's move forward across party lines as a people to get him some sort of mask. Hindsight's 20/20 Jon, as was, ironically, the shotgun the vice president used to shoot his friend, a 78-year-old man in what can only be described as his face."

i am thankful...

you know i ran across an old box of letters
when i was bagging up some clothes for goodwill
and you know i had to laugh that the same old struggles
that plagued me then are plaguing me still
-caedmon's call "thankful"
sure, cleaning out the closet and the rest of the apartment isn't exactly a spiritual excursion, but it does say a lot for my life and even mental health. i'm not good at being busy, so the past year and a half has been pretty difficult for me. i don't multitask well, so things get neglected. being an introvert one of those is friends. i don't have a lot of friends down here, and pretty much no close ones (i've got what i'd call 2 or 3 good friends down here, but i have a feeling i'm much lower on their totem pole than they are on mine). in my time in milledgeville, i've done a good job of finding one close friend and having them move away after one year.

being an education major takes a good 8 or 9 hours a day, and when you stack hobbies and addictions (internet, tv, etc.) to that, there's not much time to do things like clean up after yourself and your dog. it's also amazing how much stuff one can accumulate in just over a year and a half in a one bedroom apartment. there are the clothes, notebooks, magazines, drawings students have done for you that you don't want to throw away, small cardboard boxes from amazon and half.com shipments you saved in hopes someone would buy your old textbooks, and the dog hair and dust. so i'm putting in a few good hours now to see how far i get and what memories i can dig up. i gotta start eating right and exercising too, cause the dean gut has officially started enlarging. it's a family trademark and makes getting into khakis more and more difficult every day.

so what's this say about my spiritual life? something about get off your lazy butt you sluggard. do something good for yourself for a change. and quit hitting the dang snooze button, you don't go back to sleep so you're wasting precious time.

oh, and as for my grammy predictions yesterday, i have no idea how they came out cause i didn't watch the show. (but whit taped it for me!) that's right, mr. dean was preparing for a lesson that he taught today using edible maps to create the 10 landforms i'm giving them a test on tomorrow. it was dang good eatin'!

grammy predictions

i might not be good at march madness, but i challenge anybody to challenge me at picking music awards. here goes this year's grammy's.

  • WE BELONG TOGETHER - Mariah Carey
  • FEEL GOOD INC.- Gorillaz Featuring De La Soul
  • BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS - Green Day
  • HOLLABACK GIRL - Gwen Stefani
  • GOLD DIGGER - Kanye West
i'm going with Mariah Carey 'cause the grammies love a comeback... not that she ever went anywhere. just had a nervous breakdown, but on weight, and wore less and less clothing

  • CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD - Paul McCartney
  • LOVE. ANGEL. MUSIC. BABY. - Gwen Stefani

  • BLESS THE BROKEN ROAD - Rascal Flatts
  • DEVILS & DUST - Bruce Springsteen
  • ORDINARY PEOPLE - John Legend
  • SOMETIMES YOU CAN'T MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN - U2

BEST NEW ARTIST
  • CIARA

  • FINE LINE - Paul McCartney
  • WALK ON BY - Seal
  • LONELY NO MORE - Rob Thomas

dancing for this amateur photog

my friend laura kay is trying out for another dance company and needed some more pictures taken. we went to the dance studio last night and while the results were kinda disappointing (she wasn't really specific in what she needed) i got some fun ones too.

lessons learned:
  1. ask more questions. make sure you know exactly what the client wants. i got some decent pictures, but they weren't what she needed.
  2. if someone is short, get down on their level or lower to make them look taller. (and she said something about needing to see her feet better, so it helps that too.)
  3. contrast your subject with the background - the black blended in way too much with the dark red curtain
  4. do something artsy with every shoot. even if the person needs something bland and boring, take the time to shoot the last few frames doing something creative. while she needs body shots to apply to dance companies, i needed the motion shots for my own artistic pursuits. (and if you're doing it for free, you've got a good excuse to say, "hey, try this for me.")

musical randomness

i've given myself 5 more minutes to de-stress from the day before i start working again, so i'll do this. feel free to interpret. i'll put my own comments in parenthesis.

Go to your music player of choice and put it on shuffle.
Say the following questions aloud, and press play.
Use the song title as the answer to the question.
NO CHEATING.

How does the world see me?
"Road to Joy" - Bright Eyes (well i'm on the road to joy, don't know that i emanate it so well...)

Will I have a happy life?
"Cry" - Angie Aparo (how's that for a miserable prediction?)

What do my friends really think of me?
"Beauty and the Mess" - Nickel Creek (i am quite a mess, and i hope my photos and music are beautiful)

Do people secretly lust after me?
"All the Wild Horses" - Ray LaMontagne (i'm a noble steed!)

How can I make myself happy?
"Your Star" - The All-American Rejects ("jason" is a popular brand of telescopes)

What should I do with my life?
"Tell Me Why" - Los Lonely Boys (i do tell kids why to do things an awful lot, and try not to say "because i said so")

Why must life be so full of pain?
"Peaches and Cream" - John Butler Trio (peaches and cream would definitely give me the runs)

Will I ever have children?
"40 Acres (live)" - Caedmon's Call (yes, yes you will, on a 40 acre farm, with a pond... which means i'll come up with money somehow)

Will I die happy?
"All Around the World" - Oasis (i’ll do lots of traveling?)

What is some good advice for me?
"Older Chests" - Damien Rice ("older chests reveal themselves like a crack in the wall, starting small, and grow in time, we all seem to need the help of someone else, to mend that shelf with too many books, read me your favorite line")

What is happiness?
"Heavy" - Collective Soul (that's funny, i always feel pretty light when i'm happy)

What's my favorite fetish?
"My Stupid Mouth" - John Mayer (i don't know that it would qualify as a fetish, but whatever)

How will I be remembered?
"Mudfootball (for Moe Lerner)" - Jack Johnson ("we used to laugh a lot, but only because we thought that everything good always would remain. nothing gonna change there's no need to complain")

*so i did it twice out of curiosity

How does the world see me?
"time bomb" - dayroom (i hope i'm not that volatile)

Will I have a happy life?
"feelin' the same way" - norah jones (i think that means "pretty much, yeah")

What do my friends really think of me?
"can't get with it" - dayroom (haha, i feel like that right now, there's not enough time for everything, and i waste time)

Do people secretly lust after me?
"when the pin hits the shell" - drive-by truckers (like they lust after shooting me?)

How can I make myself happy?
"my love will follow you" - dierks bentley (yeah... gotta find someone to follow i guess. course, this is a breakup song, so maybe i already did that a few times. i will become happy by stalking! thank you for clarifying that mr. bentley)

What should I do with my life?
"beloved" - the working title ("Follow me to where we'll hide/The rest of our long lives/Dreaming in the sun to float away/The manna mysteriously will nourish every day/And thanking God we fold down to pray" I think this means “be lazy” sweet!)

Why must life be so full of pain?
"woodstock" - joni mitchell (that's right! it's those dang hippies in new york's fault!)

Will I ever have children?
"wangsta" - 50 cent (not sure what this means)

Will I die happy?
"the lemon song" - led zeppelin (i'll make lemonade!)

What is some good advice for me?
"never is a promise" - fiona apple (how’s that for advice?!? "never is a promise, and you can't afford to lie." never say never kids)

What is happiness?
deny - default (deny, deny, deny)

What's my favorite fetish?
"graduation day" - kanye west (not sure it's a fetish, cause i've stayed away from it for 7 years)

How will I be remembered?
"i still miss someone" - johnny cash (i'll be remembered as being lonely perhaps? i hope not)

that definitely took more than 5 minutes
